Manifest Buffalo: A Bison Dream (2022)
Manifest Buffalo: A Bison Dream is a series of paintings produced for Adrian Stimson’s first solo exhibition in Europe. The exhibition took place at Gurr Johns, an art advisory and appraisal group, in London, United Kingdom in May 2022. The title is a reference to Manifest Destiny, and the belief of European settlers that they had a preordained right to colonize the continent of North America.
In 36 paintings created especially for the exhibition, Stimson reimagines the bison in a variety of scenes: sharing the canvas with a nuclear explosion; fenced in by a pipeline; and a calf playfully leaping through the air, an oil rig in the background.
